Packing away his stuff after work, looking forward to the weekend, Edward thought about how this school year had been. Today was the last day of the class Kaleb had been in, and he didn’t really know what to think or feel. Well, he still felt numb, and he thought he would until he had his son back home to hug whenever he wanted. The worst part was the fact that he couldn’t witness his last day at school, see him off to the prom with Mickey, or see him get his diploma.

Edward sat and stared at everything in the classroom—all the students’ drawings hanging on the walls or their projects perching on shelves. He spotted one of Kaleb’s and a sob forced its way through.

“Mr. Watcher... Edward?”

He looked up, blinking rapidly to fight the tears that threatened to follow. “Mickey.” Edward tried for a smile, but he hadn’t hidden his sorrow well enough.

Mickey came in and closed the door behind him.

Edward got up and moved around the table. “What’s up?”

“Have you heard anything?”

“No. He came by last night, but stayed behind the veil. He was there to help someone figure out a curse, and he’s strictly business.”

“So you haven’t talked to him?”

Edward looked down, shaking his head. “Not really, no. A passing hi, and that was it.”

“Dominic talks to him, right?”

“Yeah, him and Franco. Punishment from another pack.”

“The criminal, yeah, I remember him. Shit, I have trouble seeing Kaleb like that. I know you guys are wired so differently, but... Kaleb is so sweet and thoughtful so how can he be... that?”

“I’m not gonna answer you, Mickey,” Edward said, thinking whatever he said would either be too long an explanation that Mickey probably couldn’t grasp anyway, or he would give away details that would disgust him about Kaleb and the Earned in general. He didn’t want to ruin the lover’s image Mickey still held.

“Yeah. I was going to give this to Kaleb the night he fell. Would you ask Dominic or Franco to pass this on to him?” Mickey held out a small box wrapped in white paper with silver roses.

Another sob threatened to break through, and Edward swallowed, nodding. He took the box and looked up, seeing eyes as red as he imagined his own were at this point.

Mickey hugged Edward briefly but fiercely. It was enough of a pleasant surprise to change the mood a bit.

“Thank you, Mickey.”

“Oh, and the team has decided to dedicate the last game to Kaleb. The cheerleaders are making get-well-soon signs and... well, Alex said he was sure Kaleb would still watch my games, so maybe Dominic could tell him about it? And I’d really like you guys to be there.”

Edward felt rich and touched by the students’ gesture. “I’ll be there, I promise! And I’ll see what I can do about Kaleb and the others.”

“Okay. Thanks.” Mickey squeezed Edward’s shoulder and made for the door.

Edward watched him leave, thankful Kaleb had someone like that waiting for him once the House of Enki returned Kaleb to them.
